Volume 3 (3d Edition) #1

This area is specifically for the novice instructor. You'll find 5 easy to remember combinations, which will assist you. The combinations will not include arms. Emphasis should be placed on feet first.
Beginner Tip:

Enjoy being a beginner instructor! I know that sounds odd, but many instructors who begin their career rush to get out of the beginner stage. Learning all you need to know to become a better instructor should be a worthwhile journey for you. Take the time to master the simpler fundamentals such as designing your choreography properly with a balance between agonist/antagonist muscle groups. I’ll give some examples in choreography below.

Assess yourself...you will grow

Always begin marching on the right foot; this is your lead leg.

Beginners may be more successful using linear progression. This is where you take a straight-line approach to choreography. Patterns are not combined into repeated routines. These type routines are simple and easy to follow.

Combo #1 (32 count)

Turnstep x 2, diagonal x 1, knee lift, hamstring curl, tap up, tap down moving backward (16)
Over the top x 4 (16 ct)

Repeat left lead.

Let’s take a look at the combo above: Turnsteps are moves with the body extended (or in a vertical position) as well as the over the tops, diagonal x 1, and the tap up tap down. All movement is vertical in nature.
The knee lift is a short lever as well as the hamstring curl. You evenly work opposing muscle groups, one knee lift, one hamstring.

Combo #2 (32 count)

Turnstep x 2 (8)
Over the top x 2 (8)
Diagonal, walk around x 1 to the back x 1 (8)
Tap up tap down r/l corner x 1 (8)

Repeat left lead.

Combo #3 (32 count)

Diagonal, walk around x 2 (16 ct)
Over the top x 2 (8 ct)
L step left with taps x 1 (8 ct)
Repeat left lead.

Combo #4 (32 count)

Tappin’ Basics, right x 2 (16 ct)
Turnstep, diagonal x 1 (8 ct)
Walk around the end, turnstep x 1 (8 ct)

Repeat left lead.

What’s a tappin’ basic?
Tap the bench with the right heel, then left, basic right x 1.

Combo #5 (32 count)

Knee lifts x 2 l/r corner x 1 (8 ct)
Over the top x 2, facing the left wall (8 ct)
Hamstring curls l/r corner x 1 (8 ct)
Turnstep right, squat on/off bench x 1 (8 ct)

Repeat left lead.

Repeat! Repeat! Repeat!
Your combos over and over again. Usually beginner participants don't mind the repetition of movement.

Turnstep straddle, step right on top, tap with the left, straddle down left, right (8) Straddle up/down left, right, hop up for 2 counts, exit to the back right, left x 1

Repeat left lead.

On the 2d hop you can add a lift move for variety.

Repeat for better performance.

Repeat for better performance.

Repeat your combinations over and over again through the routine. Each time you do this your class performs the movement better. Through your careful instruction, tell the class why you are doing this. Include safety cues, alignment cues, and technique cues. Your class will perform better, therefore getting more out of the class! For intensity and mastery teach 4-6 times!

Instructor Tip: Talk to your class after class. This is not to say to speak to those who are obviously in a rush, but if you have members that are around, talk to them about their jobs. Find out what they do, etc. This is a good time to find out what they like and dislike. This will help you to better design your classes to keep members coming back.
