Certification and the Group Fitness Instructor Revita D. Page, (M.S., Exercise Science candidate)
The consumer can find just about any type of fitness class at their local health club or gym. The industry is changing right along with our society, therefore; there is a demand for more diverse classes. The group exercise instructor takes the first step in becoming certified and maintains certification, through continuing education. Specialty classes such as Yoga or Pilates require additional certification and training. With accreditation and National Boards in clear view, the stakes continue to elevate for the group exercise instructor. The Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) has certified over 200,000 individuals, the American Council on Exercise (ACE) over 200,000 and the National Exercise Trainers Association (NETA, formerly NDEITA) over 120,000 fitness professionals. There are many organizations, which provide services to individuals interested in teaching group exercise classes. The numbers above clearly tell the industry there is a need for certification and continuing education training. Let's look at some of the issues involving the certification and recertification process.
